In this self-portrait, I explore the contrasting narratives of two women—one studying at a university in Iran wearing a hijab, and the other aspiring to enroll at a university in the United States in plain clothes. Through this visual dialogue, I address the complex intersection of identity, cultural expectations, and personal aspirations. By juxtaposing these two distinct yet very similar representations I invite viewers to reflect on the diverse experiences and choices shaped by social norms and the subtle dynamics that affect women’s self-expression across educational contexts and cultural backgrounds. They affect, and illuminate. The “Women, Life, Freedom” movement inspired me to revisit and re-examine this artwork.
